Q: Why is BondKap
made from PVC instead of aluminum?
A: During research and
development while performing the simulated cyclic
test, the edge of the aluminum started to cut into the
film causing failure. Although aluminum would match up
well to the window frame it is to rigid to use in this
application with direct contact to the film.
Q: How large
should the silicone bead be?
A: We recommend no less than
1/2" coverage on the film and 1/2" coverage on the frame
on ANY installation with or without BondKap! If you see
a tiny 1/8" bead of silicone on the window it will not
hold the film to the frame. The window will be easily
compromised.
Q: Do I need to wait to put the
BondKap on the silicone?
A: Yes, The silicone needs
air to cure. You can apply several feet of silicone then
go back and install the BondKap. 2 to 5 minutes seams to
work well. If you wait to long the silicone will form a
skin. Not long enough and the silicone could take weeks
to cure depending on the size of the bead. Q:
What is BondKap made
of?
A:
Window Grade PVC (plastic) The same as any vinyl window
in your home.
Q:
How can BondKap be
cut?
A: heavy scissors, tin
snips, shears.
Q:
Do you put the
silicone on the window or the BondKap?
A: If the glass and frame
are perpendicular or 90’ like a storefront, apply the
triangular bead to the window. If the frame and glass
are in a similar plane or flat like a single hung window
apply the bead to the BondKap and press it into place.
Q:
Has BondKap been
tested?
A: BondKap has been
tested and passed for adhesion and compatibility
with structural silicones used for attachment, Tremco
Proglaze SSG, GE SCS 2000 and Dow 995, documentation is
available.
BondKap has also
been tested by an independent lab for impact and
cyclic testing and PASSED. You can read the
results
here.
Q: How much
silicone adhesive is used?
A: ¾ x ¾ bomb blast bead
uses approx. 8 feet per 20 ounce sausage. ¾ x ½ hurricane bead
uses approx. 12 feet per 20 ounce sausage.
½ x ½ bead for patio
doors and most other residential uses 21 to 25 feet per 20 ounce sausage.
Q:
When installing on a
residential window how is the coverage divided?
A: When the glass/film and
window frame are co-planar or flat to each other, you
should have equal amounts of structural adhesive on both
the window frame and film. For example the BK 2002 is
about 1” wide. It should be placed on the window so ½”
is on the film and ½” is on the window frame.
Q:
Do I need to remove the gasket
around a commercial window?
A:
YES, structural silicones DO NOT adhere to
rubber. If you apply the silicone to the window without
removing the rubber gasket or at least minimizing the
exposure the installation will fail! Silicone does
NOT adhere to rubber!
